However, their sound on this album inspired many current rappers as well as brought drug culture to the front of Hip-Hop. Since then, some members have gone on to have successful solo careers, as well as see members Koopsta Knicka and Lord Infamous pass away. Three 6 Mafia, formed by Memphis legends Juicy J and DJ Paul, released their Lo-Fi drugged-up original debut album, ‘Mystic Stylez’ back in 1995. Yet Carti does fall through when it comes to keeping me entertained throughout the 45 minute tape. The production over the tape fits the mood and vibe Carti talks about on the tape trapping, sex, women, drugs and all the other typical mainstream/”wack rapper” content. While the first two tracks are, undeniably, hard as fuck, the other tracks that caught my ear was the turnt-to-the-fucking-max “New Choppa” and “Kelly K”. Although he had the nerve and confidence to drop the tape the same day as Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DAMN.’, his fanbase embraced the tape and I even saw one Instagram caption this weekend that said “Lowkey thought Cartis album was better than Kendricks” – I thoroughly disapprove with this but, each to their own.Īnyway, to the review! While Carti’s lyrical content, isn’t anything spectacular or of evolutionary standards, his ear for beats is his selling point. While the majority of his tape is produced by Pierre Bourne (“Magnolia”, “wokeuplikethis” and “dothatshit!”), Southside (“Kelly K”) and Harry Fraud (“Location”) appear for track highlights as well. While I’ve never been a big fan or gone out of my way before Friday to listen to Carti, his debut project was definitely one of the Hip-Hop projects to keep an ear out for this year. A$AP Mob leader, A$AP Rocky and Don Cannon signee, Lil Uzi Vert appear for guest features, while Carti holds down the majority of the tape solo. The days of Playboi Carti being a Soundcloud rapper are finally over as he released his anticipated debut project last Friday (14/4). His flows sound uninspired and his lyrics themselves aren’t that great. However, Yachty is not that much interest to me. They capture a less-violent and more positive themes than his affiliates. While the majority of the tape doesn’t do much for me, it’s really the instrumentals that are the selling point of this project.

Although his lyrics aren’t captivating on this track, it’s still a good filler track to past the time. The instrumental, as most are throughout this tape, simple yet interesting enough to keep you listening to the entire tape. Surprisingly, Yachty’s solo track “Interlude” is another standout for me. His rough quick-paced flow contradicts the instrumental and although his verse is one of the shortest, he stands out more than the more successful artists. While Yachty opens the record with switch ups of flows and pitch of his voice, the real standout on this record is Skippa Da Flippa. The first track that stands out for it’s instrumental and guest features is the remix to “Minnesota”. Although the twos chemistry works, they don’t captivate as much as Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan or Famous Dex and Rich the Kid. Unfortunately, Boat nor Perry’s energy or delivery on this record is…dull. The beat is melodic while simple and a psychedelic boom-bap instrumental. The second track featuring and produced by The Good Perry is a bass thumping, synth heavy, hi-hat lovers dream. However, the second half of the track is just auto-tune to the max and makes it way past unenjoyable to listen to Yachty’s exploration of his influences such as T-Pain, Lil Wayne and R.

While I do enjoy his peers’ music and his influences, Yachty’s sound and general guest verses I hear from him do nothing for me sonically or indicate any lasting influence on the culture or sub-genre of Hip-Hop.įrom the “Intro – Just Keep Swimming” it begins with some quick-paced hyped up bars with relentless energy. Now, it’s the time of the youngest ATLien to dominate the Trap/Hip-Hop scene.īefore I go into this review, I will say this: I am not a fan of Yachty. From the electric trio of Migos to the animal ad-libber Young Thug. You can find a list of dates below. For over the last year or so, Atlanta has brought a terrific amount of Trap-Rappers to the forefront of commercial Hip-Hop. Young Thug will also be heading out on the road this May as part of the “Hy!£UN35” tour to bring Slime Season to life. Slime Season 3 includes ‘With That’, a song that premiered at Kanye West’s Life of Pablo listening event last month.
